CONGRATULATIONS!

You've passed your Driving Test and can now drive on your own.

However, have you thought about how you can become an even safer driver AND reduce the cost of your car insurance?

PASS PLUS
Is a road safety initiative developed by the Driving Standards Agency, which aims to improve your skills as a novice drivers, giving you extended training to make you safer when driving.

A six-part training course, PASS PLUS gives you the extra skills and confidence to drive in situations that may not have arisen during your driving lessons.
These include driving at night or in harsh weather conditions, motorway driving and driving on unfamiliar roads.

STREETWIZE School of Motoring is a registered Pass Plus instructor.
Through both theory and practical lessons, I will provide you with the extra skills to make you a better, more improved driver. I will be looking for a good standard of driving across each of the six areas and expect to see improved observation, care, courtesy and consideration of other road users and the ability to anticipate hazards and take appropriate action.

Don't worry, there's no test - if you have completed the course successfully I will sign-off your training form and send it to the DSA who will then send you a PASS PLUS certificate.

Once you've completed your Pass Plus programme there are a number of insurers who support the scheme and will give you substantial discounts on the cost of your car insurance.

PASS PLUS MODULES
The six PASS PLUS modules are as follows:

Town driving
Driving in town can be daunting: rush hour traffic, complicated junctions and traffic systems. STREETWIZE will help you learn the skills to deal with all these and more.

All-weather driving
Rain, fog, bright sunshine, snow and ice: We will show you how to drive safely in all the different weather conditions you'll face on the road.
Driving out of town

Country roads can harbour all kinds of hazards, from sharp bends and potholes to farm vehicles and animals in the road. I will show you how to spot hazards quickly and adapt your driving to keep you safe.

Night driving
Dealing with dazzle, judging distance and speed, using your lights correctly - these are just some of the areas I will cover in this module.

Driving on dual carriageways
To drive safely on fast, multi-lane roads you will need all your skills of observation, concentration, anticipation and lane discipline. I will show you how to overtake safely, use the correct speed and how to join and leave a dual carriageway.

Driving on Motorways
Motorways are like no other roads: learn how to drive on them safely and correctly under my supervision to keep you safe on some of the UK's busiest roads.

Ex-Student Driver Diary Notes

"I'd got a lot from Pass Plus,
but knew I needed more time
to put it all into practice
for myself."
I'd got a lot from Pass Plus, but knew I needed more time to put it all into practice for myself. Driving to Oxford with friends for reassurance (plus map reading!) seemed fairly ok. But the evening before I was setting off, when I was suddenly going on my own seemed really daunting. It was going to quickly show me how important Pass Plus had been. The wonder that is Google Earth helped me understand the confusing bits of the route. So knowing where I was going, I set off over the Wolds in the pitch black. A country road, lorries - several times I had it made very clear just how blinding and frustrating it can be facing a car refusing to dip their headlights.

"One of the big things I got from Pass Plus was the idea of protecting my own comfort space around the car. I was reminded of the idea that any confidence I had in myself was irrelevant without allowing time for other people's amazingly unpredictable actions."

On the motorway, I was surrounded by either more lorries or Audis, BMWs and Mercs who seemed determined to get down south as quickly as possible. One of the big things I got from Pass Plus was the idea of protecting my own comfort space around the car. I was reminded of the idea that any confidence I had in myself was irrelevant without allowing time for other people's amazingly unpredictable actions. I was beginning to settle down though and get reasonably comfortable with passing lorries, bits of lane changing and that. Then I hit roadworks. The lanes were reduced to barely a car's width, definitely not a lorry wide, and no hard shoulder. All this at about the same time as it began to rain heavier than I have ever known. I could barely see more than blurred tail lights - a very sudden reinforcement of the lesson about keeping distance, looking beyond the vehicle in front and taking it really, really steady.

I was faced with my first very close escape from an accident and it all became quite scary. I realised just how important the 'stop for breaks' part of motorway driving was. I needed time to stop shaking and calm down! After a sleep, coffee and a check of route, a bit more of a drive, my car mysteriously took itself to Silverstone circuit, but I couldn't blag my way in! Coming off the motorway, I had a massive roundabout to deal with. The time planning the route paid off - I understood it and knew exactly which lanes I needed. But then from serious motorway I was back on tiny little country lanes. Turnings that I needed were badly signposted and several times other cars were on my side of the road. Whilst during the Pass Plus it had seemed a challenge to go through really tight country tracks, I was pleased about it now.
"I made it to (and back from!) Oxford but it without a doubt showed me how much
the Pass Plus course

had taught me…. So if you're thinking about it, I'd say go for it. Worth more than I realised, especially at 3am on the M1 with lorries either side of me!"
