Learner drivers and motorcyclists are required to pass a theory test and practical test before they can obtain a full licence. The theory test consists of 2 separate sections - multiple choice questions and hazard perception both must be taken at the same sitting. For cars and motorcycles you'll be asked 35 questions in 40 minutes and the pass mark is 30 out of 35. A new test is now being used from 3rd September 2007, 50 questions takes 57 mins and you must score 43 out 50 to pass.

Your theory test is taken on a computer which is located at your local driving standards agency theory test centre, we will advise you where your closest centre is located or you can book on line here. When you arrive you will need to report to reception so that your personal details can be registered so that a computer booth can be scheduled for you.

As we said earlier the theory is divided up into 2 parts

Part 1 - Contains the Multiple Choice Questions

*****News Flash***** Information updates are coming into effect as of 3rd Sept. 2007

As of 3rd September the multiple question section contains 50 questions which have been selected from a bank of nearly 900 questions. Estimated time to complete this segment is approximately 60 minutes.

You do not need to fear the computers at the test centre, there are instructions on how to use them for the test clearly shown and you even get to do some practice questions before you begin. Once you are ready to begin the test, then your 57 minutes will commence.

Subjects contained in this section of the test include
you will have to sit the Hazard perception test at the same time as the theory test
  • The Highway Code
  • Broader motoring subjects such as road signs
  • The environment
  • How to behave in an accident

Part 2 - Hazard Perception

Following a breather of around 3 minutes after the end of the first section, the Hazard Perception section of the test will begin this will involve you watching 14 video mini-clips and identifying hazards that will require you to take action.

Tip: You will be shown a tutorial video, this uses sample footage.

You will see 14 video min-clips, each lasting about a minute.
The mini-clips will show various types of hazards, such as

  • Vehicles
  • Pedestrians
  • Road conditions

For each evolving hazard you will be required to take various forms of action, such as changing speed or direction.

How you respond to each hazard is by a simple press of the mouse button as soon as you decide to take action, from the clues in the clip.

Tip: The earlier that you respond to each incident, the higher your score.

You can score up to 5 marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 hazards. The requirements to pass this part of the test, you presently need to score 44 out of 75. Please note that the pass mark changes periodically - we will advise you should this change.

Once you have completed both sections of the test you will return to the waiting room where you are given your results. You will need to pass both sections of the test to achieve a pass at the same test sitting.
